How I wasted 8.2 hours
I spent 8.2 hours over the last three weeks searching for carry-on luggage.
8.2 hours.
You read that right.
Travel is back, and I have several mini business trips over the next six months. I’ve been using a rolling book bag as my travel carry-on for years. I needed a larger piece of luggage to carry my podcasting equipment safely while avoiding the bag check-in line.
It started as most things like this do, with a quick Google search for “best carry on.” The ads were at the top of the search results - some that begged me to click on them with descriptions like the “Apple of suitcases.” How can I not click on that?
I read 1-star reviews and the 4-star reviews, expert articles in the Strategist and travel.com. I spent my Saturday morning Googling “July vs. Monos luggage” and “hard shell vs. soft shell luggage.” I went down the YouTube rabbit hole, watching in-depth luggage review videos, luggage comparison videos, and 10,000 miles traveled with Away luggage reviews.
Then, I went to each luggage company’s website. I was promptly asked to share my email in exchange for a 15% off coupon. (By the way, this is the 2022 version of the blacked-out van handing out candy.)
8.2 hours researching something that will ultimately get beat up, destroyed by the airline carrier, or lost.
8.2 hours for something that costs less than 1 of my billable hours.
I know I’m not the only one who the research rabbit hole has sucked in.
Maybe it’s the $200 Yeti cooler or the $300 under eye cream that promises you will look ten years younger after one month of use.
Here’s how I could have spent that time:
1) Revamping my website messaging
2) Sending client proposals
3) Recording podcast episodes
4) Creating my e-books
Why are we talking about this?
Because the #1 thing I hear from lawyers about why they can’t work on their business right now is that they’re “too busy.” And I call bullshit.
Busy doing what? Researching carry-on luggage intended to be beaten up and not last forever? Reading the 1-star reviews to prevent you from buying another Yeti cooler? Jumping from Netflix to Prime to Hulu for 20 minutes to find a new show to binge?
You say to the consultants and the coaches, who are here to help you grow your business - I don’t have time.
I’ll tell you what one of my favorite coaches said to me “Well if you had time, you wouldn’t need me.”
If you’re still reading, then don’t forget to listen to the podcast episodes I released for FREE, ya’ll.
